A New Look for Primary Beans (And Yes, There's a Window)
We've been sitting on this news for a while and we are bursting to share it. Primary Beans has a brand new package, and it's everything you've been asking for.
Literally. You asked, we listened, we obsessed over it until it was right.
Here's what's new: standup pouches that actually stand up in your pantry (revolutionary, we know), resealable zippers so your beans stay fresh between uses, and — by popular demand — a window so you can see the gorgeous heirloom beans inside before you even open the bag. Because let's be honest, half the joy of these beans is how beautiful they are.
Let's Talk About Packaging Honestly (Because That's Kind of Our Thing)
The part we're most proud of? This package is 100% curbside recyclable, made right here in the USA, and completely free of PFAS — those "forever chemicals" that have no business anywhere near your food.
We know what you might be thinking: didn't you used to have those kraft paper bags? Those looked eco-friendly. Yes. And here's the uncomfortable truth we want to share with you, because we believe you deserve to know it: those bags weren't recyclable, just like other kraft paper looking food products an store shelves.
Here's the thing about food packaging that the industry doesn't talk about enough — every single shelf-stable food package needs a moisture barrier. Not a nice-to-have. A requirement. Without it, moisture gets in, bugs get in, and food safety goes out the window. That beautiful earthy kraft paper look that signals "eco-friendly" on store shelves? It's almost always lined with plastic on the inside to make it food safe. You can't see it, it can't be separated for recycling, and it goes straight to the landfill. The bag looks like the earth. It is not good for the earth.

We fell into that trap ourselves. We're telling you about it because we think the whole food industry needs to reckon with it.
Truly curbside recyclable food packaging — without PFAS, without hidden plastic liners, without greenwashing — is genuinely hard to achieve. It requires a moisture barrier that is also recyclable, and sourcing that in a way that's made in the USA and meets our standards took real time and effort. We're not going to claim this package is perfect or that packaging challenges are fully solved. But this is as close to the real thing as food packaging gets right now, and we're proud of it.
The design itself was inspired by vintage seed packets — that old-school charm that feels like it belongs in a general store from another era, the kind of place where people actually knew where their food came from. Which brings us to the part that has always been non-negotiable: radical transparency. Your farmer is right there on the front of the bag. The harvest date is on the back. You know exactly what you're getting and exactly who grew it.
A Note on Our Limited Editions
Our limited edition packaging has its own special look, designed for low-volume printing. Here's why that matters: sometimes a farmer can sell us a small amount while growing seed stock for the following year, or experimenting with a new variety that's never been sold before. We never know exactly what's coming or how much — but we refuse to let those rare opportunities pass you by just because supply is small. The limited edition design lets us move fast so the good stuff gets to you before it's gone.
That's always been the whole point.
One More Thing: Meet Ridwell
While we're on the subject of actually doing something about plastic waste — have you heard of Ridwell? I've been a personal customer for over a year and I genuinely love what they do.
Here's the problem they solve: plastic film — the kind that makes up grocery bags, produce bags, zip-lock bags, and yes, some food packaging — is technically recyclable, but almost none of it actually gets recycled. Why? Because it jams the sorting machinery at recycling facilities. So even the well-intentioned stuff ends up in a landfill anyway.
Ridwell fixes that. They pick up your plastic film and other hard-to-recycle materials and make sure they actually get recycled — not theoretically, actually. If it can be recycled, they make 100% sure it doesn't end up in a landfill.
(Full disclosure: this is not a paid promotion, a partnership, or any other kind of arrangement. I just think they're doing something important and you should know about them.)
