The difference between fluffy and mushy rice is rinsing. Carolina Gold Rice is a minimally processed heritage grain rice and must be rinsed until the water runs clear. This will take at least 4-5 rinses but maybe more. To do this we put the rice in a large bowl in the sink, add water and swirl it around with our hands, then we use a mesh strainer to drain out the water, put the rice back in the bowl and do it again until the water is clear after we swirl it around with our hands.
If you follow these directions you'll end up with the most delicious buttered rice ever. If you are using the rice in another recipe that calls for the rice to be cooked first, complete the first two steps.
Step 1 Bring 4-5 cups of water per cup of rice to a boil on the stove. Add the rinsed rice. Bring back to a boil and then reduce to a simmer for 10-15 minutes until just tender. The cooking time will vary depending on how fresh the rice is. We sell so much Carolina Gold Rice ours is always VERY fresh so begin checking at 10 minutes.
Step 2 - Pour the rice in a strainer and rinse with cold water.
Step 3 - Spread out the rice on a parchment lined sheet pan.
Step 4 - Place in a preheated 350 degree oven for 5 minutes. Remove, dot with pads of butter and sprinkle salt and pepper and return to the oven for 5 more minutes.
Step 5 - Fluff the rice and add salt and pepper and herbs like parsley and thyme if you wish and serve.
