Guide to the best bean dips

Summer is dip season, and if, like us, you want to minimize time in the kitchen without sacrificing on nutrition and flavor – bean dips are the way to go. They’re creamy, savory, satisfying, and best devoured with a crunchy dipping vehicle. To make things as simple as possible, we’ve put together a formula for the perfect bean dip: tender beans + seasoning + acid + fat + toppings. Use this handy guide to make your own dips at home, and get creative by adjusting to whatever flavor profile suits the vibe you’re going for!

1. Select your bean: Select your bean based on the flavor and texture you’d like to impart (you can mix your beans too!). Our tasting notes for each variety serve as a handy reference. Make sure your beans are fully tender.

2. Play with texture & consistency: Blend beans until extra smooth and creamy. If the dip seems too thick, you can thin it out with a splash of bean broth, water, or citrus juice. If it seems like it would benefit from some added fat, try blending in some olive oil or tahini. Firm beans like Alubia and Bayo do best with some added fat.

3. Bring on the flavor: Take your bean dip to the next level by adding fresh herbs, spices, preserves, sauces, and cooked veggies. Don’t be afraid to experiment! Our favorite additions to date: harissa, preserved lemon, fresh oregano, grilled smoky eggplant, zhoug, smoked paprika, Aleppo-style chili flakes, and caramelized onions.

4. Brighten with acid: Adding 1-2 tbsp lime or lemon juice or a dash of vinegar balances out the richness of the beans and elevates the flavors.

5. Add your favorite toppings: Toppings create a feast for the eyes and a burst of flavor. Try adding more of what you blended into the dip, or chopped herbs, infused oils, sumac, chili flakes, or toasted nuts.
