From coastal fog to heirloom beans - how one California farm is doing it all.

Some farms grow vegetables. Some grow fruit. Some just do flowers or specialty crops. And then there’s Blue House Farm, quietly growing all of it, including over 30 varieties of heirloom dry beans, on the foggy coast and sunny inland fields of Northern California.

Founded in 2005 by first-generation farmer Ryan Casey, Blue House Farm began with a deep curiosity about how food is grown and a passion for land stewardship. After studying agriculture and training at the Center for Agroecology and Sustainable Food Systems (CASFS), Ryan launched the farm on protected land in Pescadero with support from Peninsula Open Space Trust (POST). A few years later, he expanded into nearby San Gregorio, restoring a historic 74-acre ranch that now grows crops and provides housing for year-round farmworkers.

The magic is in the two microclimates. San Gregorio is cool and foggy - perfect for strawberries, lettuces, and artichokes - while Pescadero brings the warmth for sweet potatoes, squash, and tomatoes. Across both sites, Blue House Farm grows a jaw-dropping variety of organic heirloom beans in every color you can imagine: speckled, striped, golden, marbled, deep red, jet black.

You’ll also find cut flowers, fresh veggies, and fruit at their year-round Farmstand in a hand-built redwood barn raised in 2019. It's more than a place to shop - it's a local gathering spot with U-pick strawberries, pumpkins, and seasonal events.

At Foodocracy, we’re proud to partner with farmers like Ryan and the team at Blue House Farm - the kind of growers who care as much about people and place as they do about flavor.
