Southwest Red Beans (organic)

Last Year's Harvest Is on SALE!

A new chapter for the heirloom “Anasazi,” developed by UC Davis for incredible flavor and abundance in the field. Visual eaters rejoice – the gorgeous pattern holds when cooked. Pair with avocado, chiles, and tortillas for a Southwestern feast.

Rich in flavor and history, Southwest Red Heirloom Beans create a delicious, velvety bean broth with a bold, meaty depth that elevates soups, stews, and chilis. Whether slow-simmered for a hearty meal or used in plant-based recipes, their robust character and creamy texture make them a staple for any kitchen.

Rooted in tradition yet adapted for today, Southwest Red Heirloom Beans honor the legacy of their parent ancestor, the cherished Anasazi bean, while embracing modern resilience. Bred by UC Davis in the field, not a lab, this NON-GMO hybrid retains all of the things we love about the Anasazi but now adapted to withstand mosaic virus and thrive in contemporary growing conditions. This process of cross breading varieties with traits we are looking for but to grow in different conditions is a time honored farming tradition. By adapting beans to our modern climate and conditions, they won't need harmful pesticides or synthetic fertilizers to survive. This process ensures that we get to enjoy the Anasazi distinctive taste for many generations to come.

Smooth and Creamy

These were some of the best beans I've cooked and eaten, and New Mexico has some great bean farmers. Thanks!

Tasty beans

I used to smother my beans with whatever I had so as to hide their flavor. Now I love just eating these beans with a little onion, garlic and salt and pepper so as not to lose their wonderful flavor. I will keep buying these beans!

Bean Story

Many years ago beans were a necessity for my family, a life saver. I was a single, working mom with two young children and we were far from family - on our own without any financial support. Ah, the strength and determination of those younger days. We were a bean family then out of necessity. A pot of pinto beans became beans and cornbread, then a portion went to chili for another meal, then pinto beans for bean and cheese burritos. The least expensive way to provide meals was making things from scratch and all types of beans (and rice) became a staple in our meals.

Getting back to beans after all these years has been sheer joy! I am enjoying the recipes and experimenting with different ways to incorporate them into my daily meals. No soaking - so flavorful! My favorite quick meal is a bowl filled with beans, a bit of salad greens and other fresh vegetables.

So here’s to beans and all their wonderful flavors!
