  • Sea Island Red Peas

Steeped in history, these heirloom field peas are a more flavorful and diminutive cousin to black eyed peas and are grown only on the Carolina Sea Islands. Introduced from Africa by enslaved people, they became a staple of the Gullah Geechee kitchen, typically paired with Carolina Gold Rice. During the depression, cultivation came to a stop and the Sea Island Red Pea nearly went extinct. Thankfully due to a few small farms they are making a comeback. Sea Island Red Peas are the original ingredient for Hoppin' John, a Low Country New Years tradition served with collard greens and said to bring good luck all year. They are meaty and slightly sweet, but unlike the store bought black eyed peas you may have tried in the past they are packed with deep, rich flavor that can be described as "meaty." No matter what time of year, Sea Island Red Peas will enliven a pot of beans, salad, soups and stews.

    Sea Island Peas are delightful

I have prepared Hoppin John for more than 50 years using black eyed Peas. I enjoyed this several times a year not just new years. This time I used Sea Island Peas and was surprised and delighted with the improvement. The Peas are creamy slightly sweet with a smoky aftertaste. They absorbed the seasoning including the ham hocks. This will be my go to choice every time I prepare Hoppin John for guests. I wish I could find them locally because the price including shipping is high. The Sea Island Peas are going to delight family and friends from now on.

    Southern Red Peas

These peas are enjoyed all over the south. I grow them in central Missouri. Traditionally seasoned with curry powder, carrot, onion and celery.

    Delicious!

These little beans have a distinctly nutty, earthy taste that is deeply satisfying. Because they're small, they balance well with grains and chopped vegetables.

My only complaint is that there are no cooking instructions on the package, so I had to research that separately.

But even with that, I plan on making these a pantry staple from now on!
