The monofloral honey from the Ohi’a Lehua tree can only be
produced on the island of Hawaii. The Ohi’a Lehua was the first
tree to break through the hard black lava covering much of the
island. It’s flowers are a beguiling red color that provides an
enticing contrast to the grey green leaves and black lava
surrounding it.
The Lehua, also known as Pele’s Flower, is the official flower
of the island of Hawaii. It has an important place in Hawaiian
mythology which tells us Ohi’a and Lehua were lovers. The
Volcano Goddess Pele fell in love with Ohi’a and in a jealous
fit, Pele turned Ohi’a into a twisted tree. The gods took pity
on heartbroken Lehua and turned her into a flower, which they
placed on Ohi’a’s tree forever uniting the two lovers. The
legend remains today that it will rain when a Lehua is plucked
from the tree, signifying the tears of the separated lovers.
The Ohi’a Lehua blossom produces a thick and creamy that is
known for its unique texture, which is creamy and yet slightly
crystallized. The flavor is sweet, but not overpowering with
undertones of salted caramel.
